Mashing is where the grist, or milled malt (we just went through that), is transferred to a big container (a mash tun) to mix it with some water over heat. That causes the enzymes in the malt to break down starches and turn them into sugars which eventually become alcohol. Now we’ve got mash - some sweet syrupy concentrate ready for lautering.
The mash is then pumped into a big mixer container, a lauter tun, where the grain husks are filtered in a mesmerizing process, leaving just the wort.
Now we heat things up again. Our wort from earlier gets funneled into a big ol’ vessel called a kettle (but not that kind of kettle), where it’s heated to a boil before hops (and its lovely bitterness) are added. Now we’re getting close to flavortown.
After boiling, the wort gets whirlpooled separating any solid residue from the wort to be removed, leaving just our clear liquid to move on to the next stages: cooling and fermentation.
Our still-piping-hot wort is quickly cooled down and chilled out before shifting gears to ferment.
Now we move our brew into the fermentation tanks before adding yeast. Yeast then gets to work converting our wort into beer by enriching it with alcohol, carbon dioxide, and just some general deliciousness.
